Model for robots with bacteria-controlled brains
Research Chemicals #8211;聽Forget the Vulcan mind-meld of the Star Trek generation #8212; as far as mind control techniques go, bacteria is the next frontier.
In a paper published July 16 in聽Scientific Reports, which is part of the Nature Publishing Group, a Virginia Tech scientist used a mathematical model to demonstrate that bacteria can control the behavior of an inanimate device like a robot.
#8220;Basically we were trying to find out from the mathematical model if we could build a living microbiome on a nonliving host and control the host through the microbiome, #8221; said Ruder, an assistant professor of biological systems engineering in both the College of Agriculture and Life sciences and the College of Engineering.
#8220;We found that robots may indeed be able to have a working brain, #8221; he said.
For future experiments, Ruder is building real-world robots that will have the ability to read bacterial gene expression levels in聽E. coli聽using miniature fluorescent microscopes. The robots will respond to bacteria he will engineer in his lab.
On a broad scale, understanding the biochemical sensing between organisms could have far reaching implications in ecology, biology, and robotics. You can buy research chemicals right here #8211;聽
In agriculture, bacteria-robot model systems could enable robust studies that explore the interactions between soil bacteria and livestock. In healthcare, further understanding of bacteria #8217;s role in controlling gut physiology could lead to bacteria-based prescriptions to treat mental and physical illnesses. Ruder also envisions droids that could execute tasks such as deploying bacteria to remediate oil spills.
The findings also add to the ever-growing body of research about bacteria in the human body that are thought to regulate health and mood, and especially the theory that bacteria also affect behavior.
The study was inspired by real-world experiments where the mating behavior of fruit flies was manipulated using bacteria, as well as mice that exhibited signs of lower stress when implanted with probiotics.
Ruder #8217;s approach revealed unique decision-making behavior by a bacteria-robot system by coupling and computationally simulating widely accepted equations that describe three distinct elements: engineered gene circuits inE. coli, microfluid bioreactors, and robot movement.
The bacteria in the mathematical experiment exhibited their genetic circuitry by either turning green or red, according to what they ate. In the mathematical model, the theoretical robot was equipped with sensors and a miniature microscope to measure the color of bacteria telling it where and how fast to go depending upon the pigment and intensity of color.
The model also revealed higher order functions in a surprising way. In one instance, as the bacteria were directing the robot toward more food, the robot paused before quickly making its final approach #8212; a classic predatory behavior of higher order animals that stalk prey.
Ruder #8217;s modeling study also demonstrates that these sorts of biosynthetic experiments could be done in the future with a minimal amount of funds, opening up the field to a much larger pool of researchers.
The Air Force Office of Scientific Research funded the mathematical modeling of gene circuitry in聽E. coli, and the Virginia Tech Student Engineers #8217; Council has provided funding to move these models and resulting mobile robots into the classroom as teaching tools.
Ruder conducted his research in collaboration with biomedical engineering doctoral student Keith Heyde, who studies phyto-engineering for biofuel synthesis.
#8220;We hope to help democratize the field of synthetic biology for students and researchers all over the world with this model, #8221; said Ruder. #8220;In the future, rudimentary robots and聽E. coli聽that are already commonly used separately in classrooms could be linked with this model to teach students from elementary school through Ph.D.-level about bacterial relationships with other organisms. #8221;
Ruder spoke about his development in a recent videos

These Texts Show How Candy Crush Saga Becomes So Addictive So Quickly
Candy crush saga cheats #8211; To the uninitiated, Candy Crush Saga looks inane: It #8217;s basically聽a rip-off of Bejeweled, the old casual/mobile game in which people have to eliminate objects from a board by matching three at a time.
But as those who have played the game know, it #8217;s bizarrely addictive. We #8217;ve tried to describe this several times at Business Insider: My colleague聽Megan Rose Dickey spent $127 a week聽playing the game at one point.
The game only appears to be simple. In fact, it #8217;s聽an ingeniously constructed #8220;compulsion loop, #8221;聽combining easy access, random rewards, and constant progress in an almost never-ending stack of levels.
Users often only discover they #8217;re addicted to Candy Crush when they run out of their daily allotment of lives 鈥 and are locked out of the game in a period of forced withdrawal that lasts up to 24 hours.
It #8217;s a lot more annoying than you think it #8217;s going to be.
I recently introduced Candy Crush to a friend of mine, #8220;Lorraine, #8221; who is always looking for new iPhone games.
She has twin 2-year-old girls, so she shouldn #8217;t have much time on her hands for trying to maneuver a sprinkle candy next to a striped candy. But as you can see from these texts, Candy Crush can be more powerful than a mother #8217;s love. Click here for candy crush saga help.

Candy Crush News #8211; Maker of #8216;Candy Crush Saga #8217; Plans IPO
#8220;Candy Crush Saga #8221; is lining up something besides jelly beans: bankers.
Midasplayer International Holding Co., the publisher of online and mobile games including the popular #8220;Candy Crush Saga #8221;鈥攚hich involves matching up columns and rows of candy items鈥攈as hired banks to pursue a U.S. initial public offering, according to people familiar with the move.
The London company, better known as King, has tapped banks including J.P. Morgan Chase amp; Co., Credit Suisse Group AG, and Bank of America Corp. BAC +0.99% , to handle a potential offering, these people said. They cautioned that the pricing and timing of any deal hadn #8217;t yet been completed.
A spokesman for the company said: #8220;King #8217;s success and growth presents numerous opportunities for the business to develop further, and one option would be to take the company public. However, while it #8217;s an option for the future, we would not comment on when we could consider making such a decision. #8221;
If the deal comes to market, it will be a major test of appetite for online gaming companies in the wake of the poor performance of Zynga Inc. ZNGA +1.12% shares since its IPO in 2011.
Zynga #8217;s shares have fallen about 70% since their debut in December 2011, as it has struggled to translate the success of games like #8220;FarmVille, #8221; which was a big hit on social network Facebook Inc., FB +2.27% to mobile platforms.
But the opportunity is there for mobile game makers who can strike the right cord with their audience. Mobile game sales are expected to ring in at more than $9.9 billion this year, up 13.5% from the $8.8 billion spent in 2012, according to market researcher PwC.
By comparison, PwC said, the more mature console and online games markets are expected to grow much slower, though both their sales tallies are more than twice the size.
King traces its roots to 2003, when its founders started a gaming website called, which featured games such as 8-Ball Pool that were primarily played on its website and other Web portals.
Private-equity firm Apax Partners and venture-capital firm Index Ventures invested about $50 million in the company in 2005. Since then, the emergence of Facebook and smartphones has given King and other videogame makers a vastly wider audience.
Last year, King chief executive and co-founder Riccardo Zacconi told reporters at multiple publications that the company was preparing for a possible IPO in 2013. Mr. Zacconi said #8220;we have the option, #8221; according to VentureWire, a publication that, like The Wall Street Journal, is owned by News Corp. NWSA -0.09% He also said that King had been profitable since 2005.
The company #8217;s leading game, #8220;Candy Crush Saga, #8221; was launched on Facebook in April 2012. It is the most popular app on Facebook, with an estimated 15.4 million average daily users as of the most recent figures, according to AppData, an independent firm that tracks online activity.
#8220;Candy Crush Saga #8221; has also been one of the most frequently downloaded free apps via the iPhone and Google GOOG +0.86% Play, according to App Annie, which tracks app store purchases.
It is also among the highest grossing apps on iPhone and Google Play when users #8217; in-game purchases are considered, App Annie figures show.
King said last month it had more than 70 million daily players across all its games, which also include titles such as #8220;Pet Rescue Saga #8221; and #8220;Farm Heroes Saga. #8221;
Zynga had 52 million daily active users in the three months ended March 31, down from 65 million a year earlier, according to company reports.
Despite Zynga #8217;s troubles, several other videogame companies may be eyeing public offerings. Kabam Inc., which makes #8220;Kingdoms of Camelot #8221; and the movie tie-in racing game #8220;Fast And Furious 6, #8221; last year signaled its plans to go public by 2014. The company has stayed quiet on that front since then, however.
Rovio Entertainment Ltd., the Finnish game maker of the #8220;Angry Birds #8221; series, made more than $200 million in revenue last year with nearly half of those sales from licensing and merchandise. Executives have expressed interest in an IPO but haven #8217;t detailed any specific plans.
In March, another Finnish company, Supercell Oy, said it was profitable and grossing more than $500,000 in revenue per day from its two games, the medieval-strategy title #8220;Clash of Clans #8221; and the farming app #8220;Hay Day. #8221;
More established videogame companies are feeling the pressure. Last month, Japanese game maker GungHo Online Entertainment Inc., which offers the popular mobile title #8220;Puzzle and Dragons, #8221; saw its market capitalization surpass that of Nintendo Co. The game was the world #8217;s top revenue-grossing game app in March, according to industry research firm App Annie.

Games Review #8211; Killzone: Shadow Fall
juegos friv #8211; If 2011 was the year Killzone found itself on the ropes, then 2013 is the year the franchise regains its footing. Killzone 3, released a couple of years ago on PlayStation 3, was considered by many to be a low point for the series, but earlier this year, Killzone: Mercenary on PS Vita set it back on the right course, and the PlayStation 4 launch game, Killzone: Shadow Fall, shows us an entirely new side of the franchise.
Out With the Old
Shadow Fall goes a lot further than Mercenary in attempting to remedy some of what was wrong with the franchise, and developer Guerrilla Games has smartly (and obviously) studied its聽contemporaries in the shooter space for inspiration on how make its series excel again.
The Dutch studio has created a Killzone game that feels, in some respects, like a reimagining of what its been endlessly working on since the PlayStation 2 era. It takes slivers of Halo, Call of Duty, Crysis, and Deus Ex to deliver something staggeringly different for Killzone, something longtime fans in particular may not expect.
Killzone has always been a bleak-looking game, a product of its equally bleak story surrounding two factions of warring humans, the Vektans and the Helghast, but Shadow Fall one makes a welcome turn for the colorful. If you enjoy playing free online games aswell as on your game console then please check out this free friv games site here #8211;
It takes place decades after the catastrophic events at the end of Killzone 3, with the conflict between the two sides turning into a bona fide cold war as a result of once again living on the same planet. This story has allowed Guerrilla to explore different, more subtle themes, in turn letting the team flex its artistic muscles in ways it never had a chance to.
This becomes immediately evident as soon as you begin the single-player campaign. The wake of endless war #8212; and the invasive industrial feel of previous entries #8212; have stepped aside for stunning, colorful cityscapes, lush forests, and abandoned space stations. Shadow Fall鈥檚 environments are gorgeous, diverse, and have a tangible feeling of scope, and it鈥檚 the pristineness of many of them that make them special.
It鈥檚 easy to lose track of time staring off into Vekta City鈥檚 impressive skyline, or run around looking at the plant life in the forest alongside the wall that keeps the two sides away from one another. And while it doesn鈥檛 always run at or near 60 frames per second, Shadow Fall performs nicely, with motion blur slyly hiding some of its rough technical edges.

y8 Game Review #8211; XCOM: Enemy Within
y8 #8211; Turn-based tactical games are all about tough choices, and XCOM: Enemy Within does an outstanding job of piling more of those into the first half of the campaign against the alien invasion that began in last year鈥檚 excellent XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
But as awesome as it is that developer Firaxis has given us so many more toys in this expansion (on PC 鈥 it #8217;s available as a stand-alone game on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3), the aliens could鈥檝e used some more help to keep the last months of the war competitive.
There are a ton of great changes here, but the biggest is the addition of a new resource to most of the tactical maps. Known as Meld, it鈥檚 used to buy powerful new genetic and cybernetic upgrades, and Enemy Within deviously dangles randomly placed cannisters in front of our noses. Looking for the top y8 games ? then look no further than this site #8211;
Their ticking self-destruct timers forced me out of my usual conservative patterns by pushing me to explore the map quickly, and prompted me to take exciting risks with the lives of my troops. As a direct result, my XCOM body count was much higher in Enemy Within than it has been on recent Enemy Unknown playthroughs (on Classic difficulty), and that鈥檚 reinvigorated the sense of danger.
Meld leads to another big improvement: a broader early technology tree with several viable paths. Almost immediately you can choose to delay important weapon and armor research in favor of unlocking enhancements that let soldiers auto-heal, aim better after a miss, jump to rooftops, and more.
Layering those abilities on top of the existing skill tree (which has also received some notable rebalancing) makes the number of useful combinations and possible new tactics huge, and the drive to gather more Meld strong.
Alternatively, you can spend Meld to convert a soldier into a mech trooper for access to a whole new skill tree, and some powerful heavy weaponry. They鈥檙e not as indestructible as they look, though 鈥
they can take a lot of damage, but they鈥檙e also huge targets and can鈥檛 take cover, so they end up as useful tools that reward good tactics and working with the rest of the team rather than blunt instruments. But speaking of blunt instruments, the Kinetic Strike is joyfully satisfying to use, as it blasts enemies clear through walls if you can get close enough.
Between those upgrades and new stat-boosting medals, Enemy Within poses another difficult choice: do you spread out your upgrades to slightly enhance your whole lineup, or pile them onto a few elite soldiers and risk losing it all at once if a Sectopod gets off a lucky shot?

Business News #8211; Flybe to cut over 500 jobs in the UK
Online business opportunities #8211; Flybe, the Exeter-based airline, has announced plans to cut 500 jobs across the business, despite reporting a return to profit.
Pre-tax profits were 拢13.8m for the six months to 30 September, compared with a loss of 拢1.6m a year earlier.
The company said its turnaround plan was on track to make 拢40m of savings this year and 拢45m in 2014-15.
But the pilot #8217;s union, Balpa, said it was #8220;shocked #8221; by the decision to cut jobs. Flybe employs 2,700 staff.
#8216;Challenging times #8217;
If you are searching for business opportunities online then we highly recommend checking out this website #8211; Flybe has been carrying out cost-cutting measures, but chief executive Saad Hammad, who joined the company in August, said more were needed.
#8220;It was clear to me that the existing Phase 1 and 2 cost savings were necessary but we simply needed to do more and to do it immediately, #8221; he said in a statement.
Mr Hammad told the BBC he could not say where the latest job losses would fall at this stage.
#8220;We #8217;re consulting with unions and our staff, #8221; he said.
Flybe cut 490 jobs in 2012-13, with a further 100 going in the first half of 2013-14.
As part of the cost-cutting programme some routes could #8220;possibly #8221; go, Mr Hammad said. #8220;These are challenging times, #8221; he added.
Group revenues rose to 拢351.1m in the six months, up from 拢340.8m in the same period last year.
The carrier now has 96 aircraft in its fleet, with 28 belonging to Flybe Finland, its joint venture with Finnish Air.
Passenger numbers increased 5.6% to 4.3 million in the first half of the year.
Investors welcomed Flybe #8217;s decision to carry out additional cost cuts, sending its shares up by 28% to 87.5p.

Research News #8211; New Shark Found #8211; Carolina Hammerhead
Research chemicals #8211; Discovering a new species is, among biologists, akin to hitting a grand slam, and University of South Carolina ichthyologist Joe Quattro led a team that recently cleared the bases. In the journal Zootaxa, they describe a rare shark, the Carolina hammerhead, that had long eluded discovery because it is outwardly indistinguishable from the common scalloped hammerhead.
Through its rarity, the new species, Sphyrna gilberti, underscores the fragility of shark diversity in the face of relentless human predation.Quattro, a biology professor in USC #8217;s College of Arts and Sciences, didn #8217;t set out to discover a new cryptic species, let alone one found exclusively in saltwater.
When he started as an assistant professor at USC in 1995, he was largely focused on fish in the freshwater rivers that flow through the state before emptying into the western Atlantic Ocean.
He has wide interests that include conservation, genetic diversity and taxonomy. A driving force in his scientific curiosity is a desire to better understand evolution. As it turns out, South Carolina #8217;s four major river basins #8212; the Pee Dee, the Santee, the Edisto and the Savannah #8212; are a source of particularly rich ore for mining insight into evolutionary history.
Glacial influence had limits
Quattro grew up in Maryland, earned a doctorate at Rutgers University in New Jersey, and completed a post-doc at Stanford University. #8220;New Jersey and Maryland, in particular, had huge glacial influences, #8221; said Quattro. #8220;The areas where rivers now flow were covered with glaciers until 10,000 to 15,000 years ago, and as the glaciers receded the taxa followed them upstream. #8221;
In contrast, rivers south of Virginia were not covered with glaciers. #8220;In other words, these rivers have been around for quite some time, #8221; Quattro said. #8220;The Pee Dee and the Santee are two of the largest river systems on the East coast. And we just got curious #8212; how distinct are these rivers from one another? #8221;
Beginning with the pygmy sunfish, Quattro and colleagues examined the genetic makeup of fish species within the ancient freshwater drainage systems. They found the banded pygmy sunfish in all the South Carolina rivers #8212; in fact, this widespread species is found in nearly all the river systems of the U.S. southeastern and Gulf coasts, starting from the plains of North Carolina, around Florida, and all the way to and up the Mississippi River.
But two species are much rarer. The bluebarred pygmy sunfish is found only in the Savannah and Edisto systems. The Carolina pygmy sunfish is found only in the Santee and Pee Dee systems. Both species coexist with the common banded pygmy sunfish in these river systems, but are found nowhere else in the world.
From an evolutionary standpoint, it #8217;s a noteworthy finding. These rare species are related to the widespread species, yet the details of the inter-relationships #8212; such as which predates the others and is thus an ancestral species #8212; still defy ready description.
The fact that a rare and a common species are located together in an ancient river system is important information in the ongoing struggle to clearly define evolutionary history. In the past, scientists drew taxonomic charts almost solely on the basis of physical structure (morphology) and available fossils.
The genetic data revolution of recent decades is helping redefine biology in a much more precise manner, but the process is still in the early going. If you are looking to buy research chemicals online we highly recommended #8211;
